The Association of Basic Medical Sciences of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a non-profit academic and professional organization devoted to advancing biomedical science, education, and clinical practice. Founded in 1998 in Sarajevo, in the difficult post-war period, the Association set out to promote science in Bosnia and Herzegovina, rebuild research capacity, and connect local scientists with the wider international community. Today, it serves as the publisher and steward of Biomolecules and Biomedicine (formerly the Bosnian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences), a leading open-access medical journal.
One of the key figures in the Association’s early history is Professor Muzafer Mujić, a physiologist at the University of Sarajevo and one of its founding members. He played a central role in establishing the journal in 1998 and later served as its Editor-in-Chief, guiding its development from a young national journal into a widely recognized international platform. Under his and the Association’s leadership, the journal has grown from publishing mainly local work to featuring contributions from authors around the world.
From the beginning, the Association’s core goals have been to promote scientific thinking in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina and to build and strengthen scientific capacity. It pursues these goals by supporting education at all levels, organizing seminars, scientific meetings, lectures and workshops, and encouraging collaboration among researchers, clinicians and educators. The journal has always been an essential tool in this effort: a channel for communication with external institutions, scientists and authors, and a showcase for high-quality work originating from Bosnia and Herzegovina and from the broader international community.
The Association is an honorary community of physician-scientists and allied researchers who volunteer their time and expertise to support the journal and its readers. By bringing together expertise from basic science, translational research and clinical practice, the Association helps the journal bridge the gap between bench and bedside. In doing so, it not only amplifies the impact of individual articles, but also contributes to the visibility and reputation of biomedical research from Bosnia and Herzegovina on the global stage.
Looking ahead, the Association of Basic Medical Sciences remains committed to its founding values while embracing the opportunities of a rapidly evolving scientific ecosystem. Through Biomolecules and Biomedicine and related educational and academic initiatives, it will continue to foster high-quality, transparent and ethically sound research; to support and mentor young investigators; and to strengthen international collaborations. By doing so, the Association aims to ensure that scientific discoveries from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the broader region remain an integral part of global biomedical knowledge and continue to translate into better health for patients worldwide.
